Durham County EMS conducts a 6-7 week academy to help new employees learn the "Durham EMS Way." New employees work with academy and line staff to familiarize themselves with protocols, procedures, skills, equipment and departmental operations. The academy is interactive and is filled with specialized training including driving, rapid response training, crisis intervention, and lots of simulations using high fidelity manikins. The goal of the academy is to provide the skills and knowledge to the employee to transition from the classroom to the field.
